Treadmills for marathon training
Written by Jamie Miller, Founder & EditorLast checked
Marathon training puts sustained, near-daily load on a machine that a casual walker never approaches. The specifications that matter shift: continuous motor rating and deck length stop being nice-to-haves and become the specifications that decide whether the machine survives the training block.
Continuous rating, not peak
A long run holds the motor at working speed for an hour or more at a time, which is exactly the condition continuous horsepower describes and peak horsepower does not. Where a manufacturer states which figure it is quoting, that distinction is worth paying attention to here more than almost anywhere else on this site. Seehow we grade this before trusting a bare number.
Deck length, at marathon-relevant pace
Long-run pace is usually slower than race pace, but still fast enough that a short deck shortens your natural stride over an hour-plus session — seedeck length for tall runners for the same underlying specification.

What we have not established
We have no failure-rate or longevity data comparing machines under sustained marathon-level mileage, and we have not put any machine through a real training block ourselves. How we review.
