Treadmills and weight loss
Written by Jamie Miller, Founder & EditorLast checked
A treadmill burns energy. Weight loss is a much bigger equation than that, involving diet, consistency, sleep and individual metabolism, and no page on this or any site can honestly promise a result. What we can speak to is the mechanical side: how to get genuine value from the equipment itself.
What actually differs between machines here
- Incline raises effort substantially at walking pace, which matters if impact or joint concerns rule out running — see incline treadmills.
- A machine you will actually use beats a more capable one that ends up unused. Where it lives in your home, per what a treadmill is good for, matters more than any spec on this page.
- Consistency over intensity, mechanically speaking: a treadmill's value is that it removes excuses (weather, travel time, daylight), not that any one session burns dramatically more than another.
The number we will give you, and its real limits
Our calorie calculator gives a population- average estimate from a standard exercise-science formula, at a stated speed and duration.Independently verified, Independent publication, checked 18 Sept 2026 It is not a measurement of you, it does not know your metabolism, and using it as a precise daily total is asking more of it than the method supports.
What we will not do
We will not promise a number of pounds or kilograms lost over any timeframe. That number depends overwhelmingly on diet, and nobody can honestly give it to you from equipment alone. If a site tells you exactly how much weight a specific treadmill will help you lose, that is a claim it cannot actually support.
If you have not exercised in a long time or have a health condition, speak to a doctor before starting. How we review.
