At a 76 cm stride, a mile is 2,118 steps. It is your stride that decides it, not the belt speed.

What decides the number

A mile is 1,609 metres regardless of who is walking it. How many steps that takes is purely a function of stride length — the shorter your stride, the more steps. A taller person with a longer stride genuinely takes fewer steps to cover the same mile than a shorter person walking at the same effort. Speed plausibly matters too, since a longer stride covers more ground per step, but we have no source for how much stride changes with belt speed and do not put a figure on it.

Steps in a mile, by stride

A mile is 1,609.344 m, so the steps it takes are simply 1,609.344 / your stride in metres. Three stated strides:

  • 65 cm stride: 2,476 steps per mile
  • 76 cm stride: 2,118 steps per mile
  • 85 cm stride: 1,893 steps per mile

We have no source for what stride a person has at a given belt speed. That is why this page gives strides rather than speeds, and why the only reliable way to get your own number is to measure your own stride. Not established, checked 19 Sept 2026

Measure your own stride

Walk ten steps at the pace you normally walk. Measure the distance from where you started to where your trailing foot lands, and divide it by ten. That is your stride, and 1,609.344 / your stride in metres is your steps per mile.

Ten rather than one, because a single step is easy to misjudge by several centimetres and the error divides down. This is arithmetic, not a method we have tested on anybody.

Why your own tracker is a better answer than any calculator

A pedometer or watch that counts your actual steps, calibrated to your actual stride, will always beat a population-average figure — including the ranges above. If step count matters to you specifically, trust the device counting your real steps over any calculator, this one included.
