With the global climate and ongoing pandemic causing people around the world to stay at home for indefinite periods of time, many are trying to make meaningful changes in their lives.

One of the most profound changes that I’ve seen in the lives of those around me is their personal health.

For many, this involves buying indoor exercise equipment like treadmill mats.

york treadmill mat
  • Size(s): 182cm x 76cm
  • Matt Thickness: 5mm

York has been creating fitness equipment for the past 80 years and it specializes in flooring for at-home exercise areas. This treadmill mat is ideal for people who are trying to work out at home during the pandemic because it’s versatile and can be used in other exercises.

Pros

  • While some mats can also be used for aerobics, this one is ideal for cross-trainers, yoga enthusiasts, and weight lifters. This feature makes this one our favorite versatile treadmill mat.
  • This mat is easier to store than some of the others that I’ve tried. You can easily roll it up and put it away when it’s not in use.

Cons

  • Some may find this mat small for their needs. I’ve always needed a lot of space when I’m running on my treadmill, so I found this one to be more difficult to run on compared to others that I’ve tried. For some users however, the small side provides the advantage of being easy to store, as described above.

Conclusion:

This is a great quality mat for your treadmill or other fitness equipment. It also doubles up as a great workout mat. However, we prefer not to be moving around our treadmill too much. We will highlight that it may not be wide enough for some treadmill brands, so choose carefully.

york treadmill mat
  • Size(s): 140cm x 80cm
  • Matt Thickness: 6mm

Viabito is a pioneer in the world of fitness equipment and it has been working in this field for years. They pride themselves on creating equipment that is sturdy and protects your joints. This Viavito mat is full of benefits, all of which we’re going to go over here.

Pros

  • This mat is made from eco-friendly materials that also protect you from unnecessary odors and chemicals. These materials are also compliant with REACH.
  • Weighing in at only 1.75 kg, this mat is also extremely easy to carry around. When I was done with my run, I simply removed it and did some aerobics exercises right after.

Cons

  • The biggest disadvantage for me was that this mat left marks on my carpet. While the imprints did come out after a while, I had to clean the carpets slightly before the marks eventually evened out.

Conclusion:

When on a budget, this is the option to go for. Honestly, you can't go wrong with this mat as it's 6mm thick. One thing to note is the width (80cm) and make sure it matches your treadmill size as the commercial models have big running decks.

Choosing Your Treadmill Mat: Buying Guide

To have real confidence in your purchase, you’ll want to know how to choose your treadmill mat.

How to choose your treadmill mat

If you’re going to choose your treadmill, you should know which criteria to consider. When I’m choosing a treadmill mat, the quality that I look for the most is noise reduction. When I’m running on my treadmill and the entire machine is shaking, it discourages me from running altogether. To make sure that my treadmill mat is noise-resistant, I try to go with thick mats that have anti-skid surfaces.

What are the advantages and benefits of treadmill mats?

Before you choose your treadmill mat, you should also be aware of the benefits that come with using them.

Dust Prevention

Treadmill mats can reduce the amount of dust that accumulates under your treadmill. This dust can accumulate as air passes through the motor from the dust and grime on your shoes that gets dragged across the treadmill.

Affordable

I’m always looking for new ways to stay healthy without spending too much money. That’s why I’ve fallen in love with these treadmill mats. There are alternatives on the market that can reduce noise and protect your joints while you’re jogging on the treadmill but nothing has worked quite as well as a treadmill mat.

Noise Reduction

One of my favorite things about treadmill mats is that they reduce the noise that usually comes with running on a treadmill. Some are more efficient than others but you can generally count on these mats to reduce the noise that you make when you’re working out.

With so many families stuck at home because of COVID-19, this may be one of the best features that you can find in a treadmill mat. Not having to worry about waking up my family when I take an early morning jog on the treadmill gives me (and my family) peace of mind.

How to Use Your Treadmill Mat

When it comes to using your treadmill mat, there are a few things that you should know first. For one thing, it can be hard to maneuver the mat so then it rests comfortably under your treadmill. I’ve always found this easier with lighter mats because I don’t have to struggle between the two pieces of equipment as much.

If you like to work out more than just running on your treadmill, you can also use these mats for other exercises. Some are best for specific types of workouts because they come in different thicknesses or sizes. You can find treadmill mats that work best for aerobics or for spin bikes, for example.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right treadmill mat isn’t easy and sometimes it’s hard to know where to start. It requires you to look at the minute details of each mat to decide which one is best for your needs. I’ve always preferred thicker mats because I have weak joints and I’m often in pain after working out for an extended period of time. That being said, others may prefer a mat that prioritizes silence or that reduces the amount of dust left behind by the mat.

Out of the treadmills listed above, Branx’s is my favorite. As I mentioned before, I prefer a mat that has extra thickness to protect my joints. Being the thickest one on this list, it was already off to a good start. This, combined with the mat’s versatility and durability, makes it a clear winner in my book.
