Treadmill squeaking

Work out whether the squeak follows your footsteps or the belt. A squeak in time with your stride is the deck, the cushioning or the frame taking load. A steady squeak that continues with nobody on the machine is a roller, the belt against the deck, or the motor. That one distinction does most of the diagnosis.
Locating it
- Run the belt slowly with nobody on it and listen. Noise now means it is not load-related.
- Walk on it slowly and listen again. A noise that appears only now, in time with your steps, is the deck or frame.
- Change speed. A squeak whose pitch rises with belt speed is rotating, so a roller or the motor.
- Note where it comes from: front, rear, underfoot, or inside the motor cover.
What each usually means
- In time with footfall, from underfoot. Deck cushioning, or the deck flexing against its mounts. Often the elastomers hardening with age.
- Steady, pitch rises with speed, from the rear. Rear roller bearing.
- Steady, from the front under the cover. Front roller or motor bearing. Do not open the cover.
- A dry rubbing squeak rather than a bearing chirp. Belt against a dry deck, which is the one thing on this list a household can address. Lubrication.
- Creaking from the frame when you change direction. Loose frame bolts, or the folding mechanism. Check your manual for which bolts are user-serviceable.
The cheap things first
Before assuming a bearing: check the machine is level and not rocking, check nothing is caught under the belt, and check the deck is not dry. Those three cover a good share of squeaks and none of them costs anything.
Stop if the noise is grinding rather than squeaking
A squeak is usually friction. Grinding, knocking or rumbling is a different sound and suggests a failing bearing, which can seize. That is an engineer's job, and a seized roller at speed is not something to find out about underfoot.
What we have not established
