How to move a treadmill

Written by Jamie Miller, Founder & EditorLast checked

Unplug it, fold it if it folds, and use the transport wheels rather than lifting.Almost every treadmill has wheels at one end and is designed to be tipped onto them and steered, not carried. Lifting is for stairs and thresholds only, and it is a two-person job on most machines.

Weight is the part people misjudge

Across the machines we hold specifications for, published weights run from 16 kg for the UREVO SpaceWalk Lite to 140 kg for the NordicTrack Commercial 1750. Several of the heavier ones are published as ground-floor delivery only by the manufacturer, which is a fair signal of what they are like to shift.Check your own model's figure before planning anything. A machine you can walk on wheels across a flat floor alone can still be well beyond a safe one-person lift.

Before you move it

  1. Unplug it and coil the cable so it cannot be run over or snagged.
  2. Remove the safety key and anything on the console or bottle holders.
  3. Fold it if it folds, and make sure the lock engages. A deck that drops mid-move is how hands get hurt.
  4. Clear the route completely, including door thresholds and anything you would have to step around while holding it.
  5. Measure doorways against the folded dimensions. Folding a treadmill often makes it taller, so the tight dimension may be height rather than width.

On the wheels

Take the end opposite the wheels, usually the rear, keep your back straight, and tip it until the weight sits on the wheels. Push rather than pull so it cannot roll onto you, and go slowly over thresholds. On carpet the wheels dig in; a flat board or a hard mat over the carpet makes it far easier and saves the carpet.

Stairs

Stairs are a genuinely different question, and for the heavier machines the honest answer is to get help rather than a technique. Two people minimum, one at each end, the heavier end downhill, and a rest planned rather than improvised. If the machine is over about 80 kg or the stairs turn, that is a job for people who move things for a living.

After the move

What we have not established

We have not moved any of these machines. The weights above are manufacturer-published figures from our product records, each carrying its source on the product's own page, and nothing here is a measurement of ours. How we review.
